Set up in 1948 by the United Nations as IMCO, IMO is the organisation empowered to promote regulatory controls among governments to encourage the highest standards of marine safety, efficiency of navigation and control of marine pollution.

A Government agency, Maritime New Zealand administers New Zealand's maritime legislation and provides advice to the Government on maritime matters including new rules and regulations. It is also empowered to investigate marine accidents and other safety issues.

TAIC is the NZ Crown entity responsible for the independent investigation of significant aviation, rail and marine accidents and incidents. Its principal purpose is to investigate accidents with the view to avoiding similar occurrences.

The NZMPA is a organisation set up to promote the professional interests of NZ maritime pilots and to enhance the status of pilots and ship masters when associated with pilotage.
